Special Days of Spring

Today (after a very very long absence) I am sharing with you a Wooden House Shelf that I have altered using my favorite stuff including Maja Designs paper, Dusty Attic Chipboard and Prima embellishments among others.

I had wanted to alter this shelf for a long time. When I saw the ‘March Mood Board’ on Maja Designs Blog I decided to use the color and mood inspiration for my house project.

I started by covering the house shelf with Gesso. It allows for subsequent layers of paint to adhere and also provides a neutral background to add color. I then painted it with Prima Chalkboard paint (antique pink), added some Gesso, then more paint and finally touches of Tim Holtz Distress Paint in Victorian Velvet to get the right tone of Pink.

I cut out paper pieces (from Maja Designs) to go on the inside back of the different sections. I adhered the paper with Mod Podge Matte and also went over the paper with a coat of Mod Podge. I did brush a little paint on the edges of these papers to unify it with the sides.

For the topmost section I made a teeny tiny felt birdie. I diecut 2 birdies out of felt with a spellbinders die. Then I hand stitched around it and stuffed a little cotton before finishing it off. I drew and cut a wing (2 layers) from some patterned fabric and fused them with fabric glue. Then I adhered the wing and a button to the birdie. Finally I gave him an eye with a tiny black rhinestone. I sat the birdie inside a nest. The nest is from Prima (I have had this package for ages). Then I ‘arranged’ some natural raffia and a Prima flower vines to complete this section. THe floral scroll on the roof is a Dusty Attic chipboard piece that I covered with 2 layers of Gesso. ‘The special days of Spring’ was cut from a Maja Designs Paper (these papers have strips along one edge with text). I distressed the edges using a Tim Holtz distresser and adhered the strip to a piece of chipboard.

For the next level I made Flower Pots for the 2 section on the left. I made them out of paper and filled them with tiny flowers some punched leaves and strands of brown raffia. I added a Prima resin clock in the upper section. On the right I cut a piece out of Maja Designs ‘Coffee in the Arbor’ 6×6 pad and adhered it to a raised platform. The little wooden teapot and cup (from my stash) were covered with Gesso and then I added some fussy cut roses (again from Coffee in the Arbor). The tag saying ‘Care for some coffee?’ was also cut from the same papers I distressed its edges and layered it onto another paper. It was then adhered to chipboard to give it some dimension. I pierced a hole in the tag, added a bow of jute and a tiny pink brad. The wooden ‘Love’ piece is from Prima. I added Chipboard ‘Sweet Pea Border’ from Dusty Attic to the front. I applied gesso and white paint on this piece and added some small flowers along the border.

And now the ‘Ground Floor’. I added a paper scroll tied with some jute trim and embellished with a fussy cut butterfly to the left most section. Added some small flowers to the floor of this section. In front I added a wooden cage which I had colored with distress paint (Frayed Burlap). Then I adhered a bird to the front of the cage.
To the middle section I added a Tim Holtz Vial which I filled with some mica fragments, wrapped a piece of paper around it and added a butterfly. I adhered a resin rose to the top of the cork. THe right section has some natural raffia and Prima flower vines. Hope you enjoyed today’s post.
